Warrior Leaders

Maintaining the Warrior Within

Infancy, childhood, adolescence, adulthood, senescence. These are the phases of human age progression through the centuries. Infancy, childhood, teenage rebellion, college exploration, family dedication, occupational slavery, retirement, nursing home. These are possible current phases of human aging due to the society that has evolved in only the last ~150 years. Yes, in a few lifetimes how we go about meeting our physical and other needs has changed drastically yet our physiology and psychology is the product of terrestrial adaptation through eons of time!

Society may have changed, yet our natures have not. Inside most every man is a warrior—a warrior who seeks to be in harmony with man and nature. The wisdom accrued with life experience (for those who have been there and done that) is of value to others and provides a natural opportunity to guide, hence the concept of a Warrior Leader.

Ironically, martial arts in our society is mostly practiced somewhat involuntarily by kids whose parents hope they learn discipline outside the home. After that it is a pursuit for young men seeking for identity and to test themselves in a competitive manner. These are good pursuits appropriate for those stages of life, yet what about after age thirty or so when the physical body begins to slow? What is it about fat cells that think “settling down” means moving body mass from the upper regions to the lower regions? We may not be who we were way back when, yet we are who we are now with different roles and skills to match.

Studying martial arts as a Warrior Leader involves striving to master theory taken extensively from Kung Fu (Jeet Kune Do), Muay Thai and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. There is also balance in training in that we learn about healing, meditation and yoga. Studying martial arts as a Warrior Leader in this group context keeps us sharp and helps us be our best in all aspects of life.
